mother daughterNAMI Basics is a free, six week course for parents and caregivers who have a child 18 years or younger affected by a brain disorder. Diagnoses discussed in the class include: childhood onset of bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, depression, ADD, ADHD, anxiety disorders, OCD and eating disorders.

The course includes:

  • Understanding emotional stages
  • Understanding the illness, and learning to separate it from the child
  • Information about all major disorders
  • Research being done about the disorders
  • Problem solving and strategies
  • Resources on schools, education and mental health systems
  • Recordkeeping which is useful to health care providers
  • Crisis management and relapse prevention
  • Community support and service resources
  • Advocacy initiatives being developed to affect our lives
