The mission of NAMI Metro-Suburban is to improve the quality of life for those individuals and their families who are affected by mental illness. We will achieve this goal through advocacy, support and education (free of charge) within the communities of west suburban Cook County.
One of 41 Illinois affiliates of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), our service area includes Oak Park, River Forest, Berwyn, Cicero and Proviso Township.
Incorporated on September 29, 1992 as NAMI Metro-Suburban, the organization has been an example of grassroots consumer and family activism. NAMI M-S has been acknowledged as 2005 Advocate of the Year by one of our community mental health partners, and 2008 Outstanding Affiliate in NAMI Peer-to-Peer Education.
Additionally, through the help of public and private partnerships NAMI M-S established the first free standing consumer operated Drop-In Center in Illinois. The DIC opened its doors in May 1993 and later received funding from the Illinois Department of Human Services.
NAMI Metro-Suburban relies on private funding as well as grants from the Community Mental Health Board of Oak Park Township, River Forest Township, Berwyn Community Mental Health Board and Proviso Township Mental Health Board
